Baldpate

Baldpate

August 12, 2006

Eric and Matthew Gilbertson

We climbed Baldpate during our Appalachian Trail hike in the summer of 2006.We had just finished a 26-mile day over the mahoosucs (almost a full mahoosuc traverse, though we started about 3 miles in from Gorham), and set up camp on the summit. Some very ominous clouds started rolling in at dusk (see the picture), and we thought we would get nailed, but they miraculously parted and went around us. It must have been part of a cold front, because it got down to around 32F that night. We had to put all our layers on, crawl into our packs, and do sit-ups once in a while to stay warm, since we had only brought summer sleeping bags rated to about 50F.
