Cadillac Mountain (1,528ft)

Highest point in Acadia National Park

From October to early March the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is the first point of land in the contiguous US that light strikes from sunrise. (Other times of year that distinction goes to Mars Hill in Maine). Cadillac Mountain is very close to the ocean and offers excellent views of the surrounding island in Acadia

I’d visited Cadillac Mountain during a family vacation in July 2003 and driven to the summit for sunrise. In 2011 I returned, this time as part of an MIT Outing Club trip to Acadia National Park. We rented a campground south of Acadia and I did some day hikes Saturday and Sunday through the park. Monday Pat Allen and I decided to go for a bike ride and bike up Cadillac Mountain.

We left camp after breakfast and had a fun ride to the summit. It was after sunrise, but we still had great views of the surrounding islands.
